About

Who is this person and why is he writing this drivel?

Hi!  My name is John Coxen. I am, in no particular order, a husband, a Republican an Independent, a computer geek, a father, a college drop-out, an American, a book-worm, a political moderate, a Christian, <mumble> years old and in no particular order (thank you, Spider Robinson). Note to my readers: only steal plagiarize quote from the best sources.

I’ve been married to the same wonderful woman for over 35 years. We have supported each other for pretty much all of our allegedly adult lives. We’ve talked, laughed, fought, argued and loved the entire time and I wouldn’t change a minute of it.

I have the most wonderful sons if the world. They are both smarter and better looking than me. They are no longer teenagers but they can still drive me completely insane.  At the same time, they’ve grown into such incredible young men and I’m so proud of them that sometimes I almost can’t stand it.

I’ve worked since I was old enough to mow lawns, shovel sidewalks or deliver papers for my spending money. I’ve been laid off. I’ve been called back to work. I’ve been wrongfully fired. I’ve been praised and promoted.

I believe in God. I believe in the Devil. I believe in the inherent goodness of man…and his ability to do evil in spite of that.

I have several reasons for wanting to write all this down. First and foremost, I am using this as an exercise to organize my own thoughts and feelings about different aspects of today’s world and my life in it.

Second, I want my sons to have some insight into who I am and what makes me tick. My own father died over thirty-five years ago. Since then, I’ve become more and more aware that, even though we lived in the same house for around 20 years, I didn’t really know him. Of all the things I feel cheated about by my father’s untimely death, I think that one hurts the most.

Third (and this is my ego talking) I feel that I have something to say. I don’t pretend to be the voice of “The Common Man”. I’m merely A Common Man (hence the name of my blog). One of millions. And, outside the circle of my family, friends and job, there’s nothing special to distinguish me from all the other Common Men. Maybe you’ll agree with some of what I have to say here. Maybe you won’t. Either one is fine with me. I do hope though that I will make you think.

A word of warning – throughout this little…whatever it is…I’ll do my best to refrain from gratuitous harsh language. As a rule, I try not to use profanity in front of ladies or children. However, I do believe in calling a spade a spade. So, if I think that my feelings about someone are best expressed by calling that person an asshole, I will do so with relish. If you find my frankness offensive, I apologize. Might I respectfully suggest that you go lock yourself into a hermetically sealed environment somewhere far, far away where I won’t offend you. And where your sanctimonious priggishness won’t offend me. Put simply, in deference to you offended readers, go away and let us grownups talk.

One final thing. Any opinions I might express here are just that. opinions. Unless I specifically state that something is a fact, I am expressing an opinion…mine!
